The next killer app: why Cisco loves Second Life
[source]
Cisco’s CEO John Chambers believes in Second Life: here’s a long interview. (Q&A on Cisco’s blog)
Basically, he compares SL to the early internet, when Cisco’s predictions about the future were not taken for granted. After years, the power of Internet came along, and it changed the world forever.
Now, in John Chambers’ words:
“very often if there is one thing that I have learned in my thirty years in high tech is sometimes concepts are a little bit too early but when they do take off they take off with tremendous speed and efficiency.”
This means, of course, virtual worlds.
And again:
“The future is going to be built of communities of interest and how you can access any data from any device and share that not with a machine or another person in a one to one transaction but share it among a community of interest where you think together. I think this will forever change business models. I think it will forever change entertainment and it will change every aspect of our lives in a way we are just starting to imagine.”
What a great visionary: I agree with him. The future is there. And I can bet that Cisco will be in the front row.
Thing is, Virtual Worlds are here to stay. Second Life is the most prominent one today, and Linden Lab has the challenge to bridge in the future. They may as well listen to John Chambers, to take notes!
