Reuters: Jeff Barr on the future of shopping, and Second Life

by sbrunozzi on April 11th, 2008

[disclaimer: I personally know Jeff Barr, and I have a business relation with Amazon.com]

Almost a year and a half ago, Jeff Barr, senior tech Evangelist for Amazon.com, was interviewed by Reuters, on one of the most important topic EVER: The future of shopping (particularly) in Second Life.
To clear it, a tech evangelist is, in the words of Jeff: “… to be the Web services evangelist… to communicate with developers all over the world, encourage them to look at Amazon’s collection of Web services, and encourage them to build great applications on top of those services”.

He talks about Life2Life, an Amazon shop, and Jnana, a very innovative services, both based on Amazon’s cloud computing infrastructure, and Second Life.

Here, I see a great opportunity for small businesses: without the “hassle” of building a data center, you can have your web servers, your app servers, your storage from Amazon.com, and use them in Second Life to create a new business.

There are also other alternatives to Amazon’s AWS, like Google’s App Engine (different, but in some cases a real alternative), and dozens of other “small” startups that are entering the “service” habitat around Second Life.

This is a precious “humus” for the growth of SL’s virtual economy, and to help it mature.
That’s one of the main reason why I’m optimistic on the future of Second Life, despite some gross errors here and there.

What’s your say on that? Do you see a great opportunity, or it’s just a hype/bubble again?
