A virtual study of MacBeth

You can watch this 8-minutes video of A virtual study of Macbeth, an interesting project that brought a great piece of literature into Second Life.
I’m particularly proud to say that some of the scenes were recorded in the Assisi location, where we built the Basilica of Saint Francis.

Is Second Life good… or bad?
Both of them.
Let me explain.
Second Life is good when you use it for some purposes (of course, which purposes depends on your interests and skills).
I, for example, find Second Life useful to visit reproductions of real places, to meet with people without being physically close to each other, and occasionally to see new form of arts and entertainment.
I’m sure, nonetheless, that most users find Second Life unattractive, because they have such high expectations on its potentials; people sign in because they think Second life is an incredible virtual world, and after an hour they’re still stuck in Orientation Island.

Tyler Cowen on Second Life
Tyler Cowen (author of “Discover your inner economist“, which I loved) writes a blog post on Second Life’s currency, the Linden Dollar.
I quote:
“Who would have foreseen that maximizing income from “land” sales might check this outcome? I think of Linden Dollars as akin to legal tender currencies: you can’t buy anything in Second Life without them. Since the goods and services in Second Life have value the currency does too.”
And, of course, I agree, too.

Inworld collaboration? SL’s killer app
[news source]
According to the new Linden Lab’s CEO Mark Kingdon (his first week’s blog post is here), Inworld collaboration is going to be the killer application for Second Life.
Hmm… I can agree, of course, but it seems to me that Second Life has a lot left to do, to provide a GOOD interface and environment suitable for business purposes.
And, by the way… What about their data center? Are you still going to turn down the Grid almost once a week? Please, man.

50 tips for a learning space in Second Life
Thank to Fiona, I discovered this interesting post about 50 tips and tips to create a learning space in Second Life. Worth reading.
I strongly believe that Second Life, and Virtual Worlds, have a great potential in the learning sphere; a three-dimensional space is (potentially) much better than ANY web-based learning tool, provided it’s designed with students in mind.
Currently, Second Life is a little bit too complicated to CREATE, and RECEIVE learning contents. As soon as the interface and the creation tools improve, learning will definitively get off the ground.
