Second Life Pros

Copybot

by sbrunozzi on March 3rd, 2008

Apparently, Copybots are far from dead. Second Life Herald has an interesting take on it.

For beginners, copybots are softwares that copy Second Life content (objects, prims, etc).
The problem is that copybots breaks copyright, but copyright violation is very difficult to pursuit.
This mean that a huge part of Second Life economy, the one that is based on content creation, is in danger.

This is something that will eventually extend to the real world, and become a HUGE problem.

An example?

Let’s say that I discover or invent a new DNA sequence that helps people avoiding a dangerous disease. I patent it. No one can now use it without paying me. Is this right? From the point of view of the creator, surely is, but… are we sure that such things can be “private”? Or they better belong to the “commons”?
The more we dig into virtual worlds, or DNA, or nanotechnology, the more the technology itself becomes increasingly important and critical in the world economy, the less we can tolerate private ownership of ideas… yet, we still need to safeguard creators and inventors and scientists.

You find a solution to deal with Copybots, you have a solution for a much greater problem. Good luck!
