Land prices drop… a “fascist” behavior from Linden Lab
[important disclaimer note: the term "fascist", as in the geek/computer science world, means "doing something by authority, without respect for people's rights" or "doing something in an extreme way". It has no links with (and no reference to) real life fascisms of the 20th century]
It seems that Linden Lab will significantly cut land prices, to 1000 USD per island (now it’s at 1675 USD), at the end of April 2008.
I think this is a “fascist” move: it will cause serious economic damage to thousands of small “virtual” entepreneurs, which invested in Land and/or are in the Virtual Estate business.
I’m not saying that the price cut IS NOT right: I’m saying that you can’t wake up in the morning and decide that prices are too high, and just announce a cut like this one.
You lose credibility, you lose stability… and people will (once more) start looking around for alternatives (OpenSim, OpenCroquet, anyone?)
Bah, I don’t see good reasons behind this move. You really don’t care about your community, do you, Linden?

I totally agree. Anybody can understand that land prices can be changed. But announcing the change to the community only 1 or 2 weeks before is really respectless. Everybody will have to find a solution in a short time window, may be resell the sims which value decreased suddenly… Land owners may move to cheaper regions…
What’s happening at Linden Lab ? Why such decisions are taken currently ? Many changes including Second Life servers external deployment, Community forums, we don’t really understand…
This may also have something to do with the large corporations dumping islands they don’t need anymore. Several of them bought 50+ islands then found they needed 3 or 4.
And let’s remember there is lots of land for sale on the mainland too, people are fed up paying tiering.
