I think that “documentation”, or other educational material (like tutorial videos), are one of the most important factors for the success of a technology (in this case, Second Life).
I always parallel it with Linux: when I was a Computer Science student in Perugia, I loved Linux because I had all the documentation needed for any task. Instead of spending hundreds of euros (well, hundreds of thousands of italian “Lire”) in Microsoft manuals, I had all this stuff for free (and lots of people on IRC ready to help you, or hug you if you weren’t good).
Second Life, from this point of view, is doing a pretty good job. Linden Lab can improve it, of course, but… They’re good, after all!

Those will be mighty helpful both for new and old residents.
Many software packages in the ‘open software’ arena lack good documentation. They rely instead on forums which define the quality of ’support’. Its not always good.
Maya, I agree; my experience in Linux tells me that good documentation is necessary for a good product/software!
