Warren Adler in Second Life

Warren Adler in Second Life

Today I met Warren Adler, the writer (Avatar: WarrenAdler Aeon), at the Amazon.com island.
It was interesting, and fun.
Those kind of meetings, expecially if well organized like this one, can lead to interesting cultural exchanges, and I think that the “book” market can be strongly affected by the potential of virtual worlds… Think about it: PAPER, six thousand years old, AFFECTED by VIRTUAL WORLDS (just thirty years “young”).
Cool.

This is some transcript of the event (“You” means me, of course):
[12:49] You: Warren, sorry to interrupt you: is there a precise moment for questions?
[12:50] WarrenAdler Aeon: Rane: If you worry about …read more

Erepublik in Second Life

Erepublik is a massive strategy online game, which takes place in Second Life but also has a web interface.
An interesting idea, the project is still in beta, but it’s already attracting people from all around the world.
Promising.

Good news: realXtend joins OpenSim.
I really hope OpenSim will eventually become an open standard for virtual worlds… and I also hope that Linden Lab will face this dilemma once and for all.

Virtual Hospitals, a promising business for Second Life

Virtual Hospitals, a promising business for Second Life

Cisco launches an immersive hospital SIM, a promising business for Second Life.

This is a supermodern Hospital that will open in 2011, and they already have its virtual simulation up and running (I’m sure it will help better designing the final steps of the building).
This kind of activity will lead to promising businesses, because it will help to save money, and help people choose their room, for example, or do a lot of other stuff.
Many activities can benefit from the presence of a virtual counterpart, like in this case.

Question on the future

Question on the future

Did you ever read something from Ray Kurtzweil?
I find him coherent and interesting, expecially when he talks about how the Law of Accelerating Returns will affect our life in the near future. In twenty years, we’ll experience the progress of the past fifty years, and this will translate into nanotechnological implants, quantum computers, and so on.
Virtual life will become more and more real, in the form of augmented reality and/or improved virtual worlds inside a PC screen.
(more infos in his latest book, The Singularity is Near).
What we see now, in 2008, will appear as primitive in 2028. Our fears and …read more

January 2008 economic metrics, by Meta Linden

Meta Linden (you probably didn’t know that every Linden Lab employee has an avatar with “Linden” as last name) just published the key economic metrics of Second Life for January 2008.
He says that:
“Concurrency, usage hours, and total resident-owned land continue to grow at a steady pace, while our count of Premium users dropped slightly again in January as we work on designing a better Premium offering.”
In my opinion, the growth will never stop; we still need to focus on clearer business models, and some tech improvements (the scripting language, the user interface, etc).
What do you think? What does Second Life …read more
